Plazas Comunitarias

Objective

The main goal of the Plaza Comunitaria at Adelante Alliance is to make the right to education a reality for Spanish-speaking immigrants.

Program Description

Adelante’s Plaza Comunitaria is an adult literacy program that gives Spanish-speaking adult learners the opportunity to complete their formal education in their native language. The program offers literacy, elementary and secondary education. The program is carried out through the Mexican Educational Department. In addition to basic subject areas, Adelante’s Plaza Communitaria encourages critical thinking through popular education methodologies.

English for Every day Life 

Objective

The objective of the English for Everyday Life program is to empower Spanish-speaking immigrants so they can communicate in English in their everyday lives.

Program Description

The English for Everyday Life program emphasizes verbal communication and everyday language so that Spanish-speaking immigrants can become familiarized and comfortable using English at work and in different settings like hospitals, schools, supermarkets among others. While students learn grammar and writing, the program encourages adult learners to speak and communicate. The classes are built around topics relevant to Spanish-speaking immigrants.

Women in Action Collective

Objective

The objective of the Women in Action Collective is to build leadership among Latina immigrant so that they can be empowered and can contribute to solving the most pressing issues affecting their communities.

Program Description

The Women in Action Collective is a women’s collective working with Spanish-speaking immigrant women helping them assume leadership within the organization and the community, and thus promote social change. The Women in Action Collective is guided by the belief that transferring leadership to the people who live and understand the problems in the community is the best way to achieve social change and improve the lives and address issues faced by the community.

GED in Spanish

Objective

The objective of the GED in Spanish program is to develop critical thinkers, raise consciousness and use education as a tool for liberation.

Program Description

The GED in Spanish program aids adult learners to prepare for the GED Exam. While students prepare for the GED test, the program also builds adult learners’ critical thinking skills and aims to raise consciousness so that education becomes a tool for liberation. The program was designed with the specific social condition of Spanish-speaking immigrants in mind.

This program will be open until February

 

Computer Literacy for Adults

Objective

The purpose of the Computer Literacy for Adults is program is to increase Spanish-speaking immigrants’ access to computer technologies.

Program Description

The Computer Literacy for Adults program gives Spanish-speaking adult learners the opportunity to familiarize themselves with computer technologies in their own language, and provides them with the skills necessary for using a personal computer, learn the basics of commonly used computer programs, as well as how to navigate the Internet and use e-mail. Additionally, the program offers adult learners the opportunity to learn skills that they can use in their everyday lives and at work such as writing formal letters, putting together their resume, fill out forms, looking up information, etc.

Learning Spanish through Art

Objective

Learning Spanish through Art has as its goal to create a safe space for Latino children to express themselves verbally and artistically.

Program Description

Our Learning Spanish through Art is an after-school program that helps strengthen children’s Spanish-language literacy and English-language academic performance. The program uses art as a way of creating a safe space for children to express themselves, to value their culture(s) and to reach their full potential. The program provides hands on activities where children can learn, play, and explore multiple forms of expression.

Youth Media Collective

Adelante’s Immigrant Youth Media Collective combines radio, video, and computer technologies as tools to develop critical thinking, community awareness to drive social change through grassroots media making.  In 2006 and 2007 we completed our first radio programs, two documentaries: “How alcohol abuse impacts immigrant men in Sunset Park, Brooklyn,” and “Education in Sunset Park.” The Media Youth Collective wrote media articles that were published by The Barrio News and reported on gangs in Sunset Park and Latinos in Iraq.
